Optional Post Conference Tour
November 9, 2007

The Post Conference tour will be visiting:

  • Mauna Kea Bananas and Hamakua Springs an innovative, award winning, and eco-friendly family-owned farm,
     
  • Green Point Nurseries, a tropical cut flower farm and wholesaler featuring anthuriums and many other tropical flowers and foliage, and
     
  • Hawaii Pride, a facility that uses an electronic beam irradiator to treat fresh produce to meet quarantine requirements for fresh produce shipped to the U.S. mainland. These facilities are not normally available to tourists through commercial tours.
     
  • The tour will continue to village of Kalapana that was devastated by lava flows between 1986 and 1991.

The Schedule:

  • 0730
Depart from Hilo Hawaiian Hotel by bus
  • 0730 - 0800
Travel to Pepeekeo, HI
  • 0800 - 0930
Visit Hamakua Springs Country Farms (Richard Ha host, banana and greenhouse vegetables)
  • 0930 - 1000
Travel to Panaewa
  • 1000 - 1100
Visit Green Point Nursery (Host Eric Tanouye, tropical flower farm and shipper)
  • 1100 - 1115
Travel to Keaau, HI
  • 1115 - 1215
Visit Hawaii Pride, E-Beam facility for irradiation of produce for quarantine treatment (Host Eric Weinert)
  • 1215 - 1245
Drive to Kalapana
  • 1245 - 1415
Lunch and visit Kalapana lava flows (From about 1987 ? 1993 lava flows overran much of the village of Kalapana. The famous Kaimu Black Sands beach is now about ? miles inland from the new shoreline.)
  • 14 15 - 1500
Drive back to Hotel
